All About Ideal Cut Diamonds

By: Shayna Schnereger

Ideal cut diamonds are those that have been cut following a special formula. This formula has proven to make for the most beautiful, brilliant diamonds. Diamond shapes have a lot to do with the brilliance of a diamond as well. The round brilliant is the diamond that has become popular as having the "ideal cut."

The formula that is followed for ideal cut diamonds allows for the best light reflection from the diamond. If you have the wrong cut on a diamond it will not sparkle the way that it should.

If a diamond is cut too deep, the light will reflect from the wrong angle. The light then escapes from the side of the diamond instead of from the top. A diamond that’s been cut too deep looks black right in the center.

Some diamonds are cut too shallow. If it’s too shallow, light will spill from the bottom of the diamond making it appear dull and lifeless. You want your diamond to look brilliant and give off fire and sparkle but if it’s cut the wrong way it can’t.

In ideal cut diamonds the light enters the stone and is dispersed to precise angles in the stone. The light is then bent back to the center of the stone and reflects back through the top of the diamond. This is what causes the brilliance and fire in a diamond.

Though proportions are important they alone will not tell you everything about a diamond. The end product of a diamond includes diamond shapes, proportions, cut and finish. And even after all of that, beauty is still in the eye of the beholder.

Ideal cut diamonds cost more than other diamonds. But it’s to be expected because of the skill and time involved. And you’ll usually need to special order an ideal cut diamond because most jewelers don’t regularly stock them.

Ideal cut diamonds are worth the trouble though. They are spectacular and when you see them you’ll agree. And when you’re shopping around and you see diamond shapes other than the round brilliant marked as "ideal cut" look a little closer and ask a lot of questions; It’s usually the round brilliant diamond that has the "ideal cut."
