Diamond Education and Guide: Marquise Shape Diamond
By: Bijan Aziz
Unlike round diamonds, "fancy" shapes, all shapes other than round, have no set formulas, so evaluating the make of a fancy is more subjective. Table and depth percentage can vary widely among individual stones of the same shape, each producing a beautiful stone. Personal taste also varies with regard to what constitutes the "ideal" for shapes other than round.
The heart shape is a brilliant cut, which can be modified so that the number of pavilion mains may be 6, 7, or 8. It is important to look for a perfectly symmetrical appearance where the lobes, top arches, are of even height and breadth and the overall shape pleasing to the eye. The length to width ratio should ideally be 0.98 - 1.02.
Heart Shape diamonds are essentially Pear Shape Diamonds with a cleft at the top. They are the ultimate symbol of romance. Many people are choosing Heart Shape diamonds for engagement rings and anniversary rings.
Sometimes, it make more sense to choose a smaller size diamond in order to purchase a better quality diamond with better cut, clarity, and color. There is almost this notion that love is measured by the size of the diamond. But keep in mind that a 3 Carats diamond can lack luster and sparkle, and that a 1 Carat diamond can blaze with fire and shine.
