Comparing Diamonds of Different Size

When diamonds of different sizes are compared, the difference in size can make grading more difficult because the large stone shows the color saturation more clearly. Beginners particularly tend to rate the color lower because it is "apparently" more clearly visible. The effect of the more intense color impact can be lessened by judging only the upper third of the pavilion of the stone in color comparison.

Varying Color impression

Occasionally a brilliant appears to show differing when seen from different sides. This is caused by structural in homogeneities. In such a case it is assigned to the lower grade-grade. Generally speaking, in doubtful cases a debatable stone should be classified in the lower grade-grade.

Comparing Diamonds of Different Hue

Brownish and greenish diamonds whose grade suffusion is not sufficiently intense for them to be rated as fancy colors can likewise be compared with the yellow series. The grader should attempt to ignore the actual hue of the grade and to classify the stone solely according to the degree of its grade saturation in the series.
For this, brown is more readily and more intensely perceived as a darker tone of grade than yellow or even green. There is a tendency therefore to assign lower grades to brown tinted diamonds at first sight.
