Jewelry

When a man proposes to a woman, he offers her a ring, preferably a diamond ring. Why a ring - a piece of jewelry and not something else? Because a piece of jewelry is valuable and presenting it signifies the preciousness of the fiancée in the eyes of the fiancé. An engagement ring no matter the stone or the metal that was used to create this everlasting sign of beauty or love in a fashionable piece of jewelry will be worn for years to come.

In short jewelry stands for - beauty, financial strength and a token of love. The emperors, their queens, the rich people, the aristocrats of the past and their huge collection of jewelry reaffirm this.

Since the early times, women as well as men have loved the idea of adorning themselves with jewelry. In ancient times, fine cut shells were used to create jewelry, now jewelry is made of gold, diamond, silver, gemstone, pearl and platinum that is finding its way to the treasure chests of women’s cabinets.

Jewelry adds to the beauty of a person and accentuates his/her financial status. Rings, bracelets, armlets, pendants, necklaces, chokers, earrings, nose studs and anklets are the varieties of jewelry that is preferred by today’s women. The jewelry pieces may be made up of any of the metals like gold, silver or platinum and may be studded with diamonds and other gems. The crowns, tiaras and waist belts worn by the kings and rich people are jewelry that’s hardly used these days except for ceremonial purposes. Designing of jewelry is a big business now and millions of people are employed in this industry all over the world.

Jewelry for men is confined to rings, necklaces, bracelets and watches. While men may prefer to wear thicker gold chains with simple designs women would like their necklaces to be intricately designed. Some men pierce their ears and wear an earring. These rings too are mostly plain in design in comparison to women’s.

Whatever the gender, the fascination with jewelry continues.

    Jewelry

    By: Alison Cole

Whether made of diamonds, stones, pearls or precious metals, a piece of jewelry speaks more than a thousand words. An ideal gift for every occasion, jewelry is preferable over most other gifts"”especially to women. A glittering diamond necklace by a lover would be preferable to a woman than the stars that he offers to pluck from the sky as a proof of his love.

There is no data to determine when men and women started adorning themselves with jewels. If looking beautiful can be considered as an innate desire of every human being, then the history of jewelry goes back to the time when civilization began. We have records, though, on who presented the world’s first diamond engagement ring to his beloved. It was in the year 1477, when Archduke Maximillian celebrated his engagement to Mary of Burgundy by presenting her with a diamond ring set in gold.

Now, of course, jewelry is a necessary means of embellishment for any fashionable woman worth her salt. And with such a plethora of designs to choose from, it is tough to resist the temptation to buy some to match with your favorite dresses. Just as Cassius asked Brutus, "Who so firm, that cannot be seduced", so seems to say the glittering diamond ring in the show window. It’s all very well if you are seduced by a beautiful piece of jewelry, but it is equally important to be conversant with all aspects of estimating the value of an expensive piece of jewelry before you venture into buying one.

Diamonds, pearls, precious stones and metals"”each has parameters that establish its purity, and subsequently its worth. There is no dearth of articles on jewelry that will give you a fair amount of information on all kinds of jewelry. So, before you buy a symbol of love and faith for your wife, be sure that it is a genuine one"”just like your feelings!)

Throughout the world jewelry is a way to show off your wealth and position. At the same time they are kept in a safe place.

For the nomad people in North Africa and India the silver bracelets and necklaces were a portable bank account. In India both men and women wear hansi - necklace with the picture of a God, to protect against illness. In Greece they wear charms to protect against the evil eye.

Bracelets made of ivory, bone or plastic are worn by the women in Rajahastan. This shows the woman is married and has moved to her husband and she keeps the bracelets until her husbands dies.

In India you can chose from a large variety of jewelry. The toe rings are for married women only. Before they get married they get gold and silver jewelry which is their dowry. This is her only belongings in her marriage.

Pearls was an asset in Africa, both as money and as a sign of wealth and position. Shaka, a Zulu king in the 18th century, loved pearls so much he decided that every pearl found in the area should be shown to him so he could decide to keep it himself or not.

Visit markets in the countries you visit and collect some fine pieces! Jewelry are never outdated and will always give you pleasure.
