Re-manufactured Ink Cartridges: Use or Not to Use?

By: Vlad Z

Those wonderful deals where a printer came free when you bought a computer, generally come with a catch. The catch is that either printer ink is very expensive and sometimes you can not just jump in the car and pick an extra cartridge from your local Office Max because just as it happens, the cartridge you are looking for can be ordered only from manufacturer.

Fortunately there are many on line stores that can offer you great quality re-manufactured ink cartridges at the fraction of the price that you would pay for to the original maker. Why is it though, that these companies can offer such prices? Well it comes down to very simple fact that Re manufactured ink cost less to produce, all that is needed empty cartridges and technology to refill them as well as to maybe substitute some parts that were worn down from previous uses. How good are these products? Good enough for many people to never buy a new ink cartridge again!

But what about printers warranty?

You may have heard that before that use of refurbished ink cartridges may endanger your printers warranty. How much truth is to that fact and is there any law that could protect you as consumer against loosing warranty on products while using compatible parts? Many consumers are worried if the use of compatible or after-market printing supplies will void their printer’s warranty. The answer is no.

More simply put, this means that your printer warranty cannot be voided just because you choose to use compatible or re-manufactured products unless the manufacturer can prove that the compatible product caused direct damage to your printer. In cases such as this, the manufacturer may choose not to repair your printer but your warranty would remain in effect for all other warranty issues.

You can find detailed description of this law that protects you as customer in the United States Code Annotated, Title 15 Commerce and Trade, Chapter 50 Consumer Product Warranties. The truth is though that unless you have brand new printer, you warranty terms have probably expired so using re-manufactured ink cartridges will not affect you anyway.

There are two reasons in favor for considering using re-manufactured ink cartridges:

Reason number one is that it can save you up to 75% in costs.

Reason number two it helps to save our environment.
