The Dos and Don’ts of Shoes and Shorts

By: Shelley Costello

It’s getting warmer, summers around the corner and those shorts are going to come out at some point.

What do you wear with yours?

Tennis shoes or trainers as they are known in England, look great with shorts. They are casual, practical and comfortable but in heat they will just crucify your feet. No matter how cool you dress, if you tie your feet into trainers your feet will swell up and you’ll be nursing blisters for days.

On the other hand unless you have legs like Cindy Crawford heels won’t work too well with shorts either. Teetering heels and shorts look good with model tanned legs but looking at it from a point of view of feeling comfortable they aren’t a good option either. If it’s hot out there and you are wearing heels, your feet will slip because of the angle they are sitting at.

Flat shoes can make your legs appear shorter, especially in shorts and ideally you want to be slimming and lengthening the look of your legs overall.

Any heel height adds shape and lengthens the look of your legs. A heel will also lift your bum by 25% - great if you are wearing shorts.

You want the advantages of the heel without the hassle.

There are a few alternatives. These will make your legs appear longer and more shapely, give your bum a lift, feel comfortable, fashionable and compliment the shorts you are wearing.

Wedges are one of the major players this Spring/Summer season in footwear. A shoe with a wedge is not like wearing a high heel and is easy to walk in. You don’t have to opt for a high wedge, two inches is enough.

Wedges come in lots of styles from closed toe, sandals, ankle ties and straps and espadrilles.

Espadrilles look perfect matched with shorts. They are summery, lightweight and usually have some wedge heel to them.

Designers have worked platforms and wedges well this season and because stacked heels are at the height of fashion you can get more height without it being all on the heel itself. Choose a platform wedge and see how good your legs look in your shorts.

A great advantage this season is that natural materials are featuring in footwear ranges. Wedges in particular have cork and hemp soles and heels making them more lightweight for summer.

Sandals are always the first choice when it’s hot but choose something a little different. Thong sandals with a slight wedge or heel to them will lengthen the look of your legs, teaming well with your shorts.

Overall ties and straps look great with shorts. Sandals, wedges, thongs, espadrilles and even flats have styles with pretty ankle straps or ties.

Get the shoes right and your shorts will do wonders to your overall appearance and the look of your legs.
