The Newest Technology In HD TV

By: Brian Johansson

There has been great news lately about HD TV. The annual CES show in Las Vegas has shown some promising new products that will take High Definition Television to the next level. The biggest news for HD displays was the unveiling of HD DVD. Though it may take some time, HD DVD is going to be the new standard of how we watch movies. The only problem is that you have to start your movie collection all over. Or do you? The great part about these new HD DVD players is that they will play CDs, DVDs and HD DVDs.

Some players even have the capability of upconverting your present collection of DVDs to a higher resolution. That means that the new players actually fill in the lines on the screen that DVDs do not. This technology does not necessarily make the picture better, it makes the picture more appropriate for high resolution displays.

The other great news for HD TV is the size of the displays that are coming out. The CES show featured many new plasma televisions that are 1080p capable for the next generation of HD video, but that’s not all. There is a plasma by Panasonic that is a unbelievable 103 inches diagonal. This television first went on sale for $150,000.00 retail. This is way up from 2005’s show that featured a Samsung plasma of 80 inches. That television only cost around $40,000. So, you can see that it will be a couple of years until most house holds have huge plasmas in their media rooms.

Some other great news for HD TVs is the medium that is used to connect their components has gotten even easier. DVI was a great improvement over component video cables a couple of years ago, but now there is HDMI. HDMI stands for High Definition Media Interface and it is the best you can get for home theater. One cable now carries both audio and video streams in pure digital format. Not only is it the best quality, but there are no more cluttered wires to worry about.
