When Doing Business Look Past the Suit and Tie

By: Lance Winslow

Many people are impressed with expensive suits and neckties? They believe in dressing for success. Yet, what if you are already successful? Why would you wear something that tries to choke you? That’s ridiculous, who invented that necktie anyway? Some dictator in history who wanted to be able to quickly strangle subordinates who pissed them off; if so, probably a good way to do that? Personally I am not one to where a dog collar, it is beneath me; I have more respect for myself than that.

Recently an image consultant was touting the use of expensive suits and neckties in business, but I have to make the following comments:

"Hey now young lady, I don’t even own a suit or a tie. Of course being self-employed has its advantages of course. I always look past the suit, I am never swayed by slickness only a feel for character. As a matter of a fact a suit makes me suspect the person is hiding behind a front, that he is weak inside or hiding the fact he lacks integrity. I therefore always ask more questions and seek conversations outside their area of expertise to see if they are intelligent. Never take advise from anyone in a suit until they can prove to you that they know about what they are talking about."

Of course the image consultant totally disagreed with me, but that’s okay, I would never hire her anyway, I’d fire her ass and throw her out on her ear. You see we have too many people running around as imposters and posers, pretending to have knowledge, wisdom and experience when all they have is some nice threads. Personally give me some levis, a decent shirt and some New Balance or Nike Shoes and let’s see who has what it takes to get it done? Consider this in 2006.
